Taking its title from one of the most famous Biblical parables, THE PRODIGAL (1983) is a film about faith - and the consequences of a lack thereof. Greg Stuart (John Hammond, CROSS CREEK) is the eponymous prodigal, an aimless young man who lives in the woods reading Thoreau and earning a meager living on a fishing boat. He is "found" by his seminarian brother and persuaded to return home. John agrees only to find his family in disarray. Everyone soon faces a moment of crisis, and is left with at least one difficult decision to make. Salvation - or at least the promise of salvation - comes in the form of a Billy Graham Crusade. The well-timed event touches every member of the family and the film ends with the hope that John, his brother and parents have found the means to rebuild their shattered lives.

For this dramatic family crisis story, Broughton engages full compliment of strings, woodwinds, guitars, piano, percussion plus judicious use of French horn. Beautiful themes with Broughton's warm Americana sensibilities highlight. Gentle woodwind solos make appearances, a few moments of frightening material play in contrast. Broughton also wrote his own "source" music as well as two songs that are spotlighted in the picture, including the memorable "I Have Today" sung by the incomparable B. J. Thomas.
