Pop singer Vicky Robbins collapses from exhaustion, and her doctor orders her to take an extended vacation on a small island off the coast of England. She rents a small cottage on a farm belonging to Ralph Hargrove, a taciturn man interested only in tending his beehives. Hargrove is constantly irritated by Manfred, another beekeeper, who allows his bees to swarm over the adjoining property. For some time local police have been receiving what they consider crank letters from someone on the island who claims to have developed a strain of killer bees; unless his achievement is recognized, he threatens to unloose them on the populace. Upon learning of the threats, Vicky becomes suspicious of her host, whom she has caught secretly taking blood from his horse in the middle of the night. Mrs. Hargrove's pet dog is inexplicably stung to death by bees, and Vicky's shock quickly turns to terror when Mrs. Hargrove is also found dead, her face horribly distorted by bee stings. After narrowly escaping an attack herself, Vicky races to Manfred's home for shelter. Only then does she learn that it is Manfred who has developed the deadly bees and has unloosed them because Hargrove is trying to learn his secret. Manfred accidentally becomes smeared with the bait that attracts the deadly insects and is stung to death.
